Atomic-absorption determination of copper(II) in water samples after its cloud point extraction preconcentration

Abstract

The conditions of cloud point extraction preconcentration of Cu(II) in the form of its complex with 6,7-dihydroxy-4-methyl-2-phenylbenzopyrylium chloride in the micellar phase of non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100 were studied and optimized. It was established that with the introduction of ammonium benzoate into solution with Triton X-100 concentration 0.4% (w/w) and adjusting pH to 4.5, the formation of the micellar phase is observed at room temperature. A method for the atomic absorption determination of Cu(II) after its cloud point extraction preconcentration was developed. The calibration curve is linear in the concentration range 5.0–213 μg/L, and the LOD and LOQ are respectively 1.5 and 5.0 μg/L. The proposed method was applied to analyze the waters of different categories, and the RSD does not exceed 0.04.
Key words: cloud point extraction, atomic absorption spectroscopy, copper(II), water analysis.
