Geraniol determination in dental hydrogel samples containing pelargonium graveolens essential oil by gas chromatography

Abstract

Geraniol is one of the main biologically active substances-markers of Pelargonium graveolens essential oil, which has antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, astringent properties. A method for quantitative determination of geraniol was developed and successfully tested using dental hydrogel (toothpaste) containing Pelargonium graveolens essential oil as a sample by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. The developed method can be successfully used to determine the content of geraniol and serve as the basis for the development of similar methods for quality control of products, which include geranium essential oil.
Key words: essential oil, dental hydrogel, Pelargonium graveolens, geraniol, gas chromatography, flame ionization detector, State Pharmacopoeia.
