Photometric determination of copper(II) by catalytic action on the reaction of iron(III) reduction with thiosulphate ion

Abstract

A method is proposed for the kinetic determination of copper(II) by its catalytic effect on the reduction of iron(III) with thiosulfate ion, followed by photometric detection of the destruction of iron(III) thiocyanate. Optimal reaction conditions were selected. Copper(II) determination limit is 0.06 μg/cm3; relative accuracy is 4%. The results are characterized by good convergence and accuracy. The technique is applicable for the quantitative determination of copper(II) in water.
Key words: copper, kinetic methods of analysis, spectrophotometry, waste water.
