ABSTRACT. It is shown that the mechanism of photoinitiation in the chain reaction of sulpho group substitution for bromine in 1-bromo-2-naphthol depends on the energy of exciting light. On irradiation of the solution at 313nm, the initiation is mainly due to dissociation of the carbon-bromine bond, whereas at irradiation by 365nm light, it is associated with the reaction of triplet molecules of bromonaphthol with its nonexcited molecules.
