Abstract. Spinodal decay of the laser-induced labile liquid state of a carbon was observed by TOF MS and the electric probe technique as a threshold-like appearance of the carbon giant cluster ions ( sized from 50 up to million atoms ) at 0.3 GW/cm2 power density value besides the small cluster ions (C1-25) detected in mass spectra over the whole power density range. The intensities of the giant cluster ions measured by the electric probe technique were million times lower than the small cluster ion intensities but the estimated total mass of the giant cluster ions fraction was comparable with the same value for the small cluster ion fraction. Thus these groups of cluster ions can be considered as the nuclei of liquid and vapour phases produced by the spinodal decay of the labile liquid state of a carbon.
