Spectral and structural properties of luminescent carbon nanoparticles obtained by electrolysis of an alcohol solution of NaOH

Abstract

Abstract.Carbon nanoparticles were obtained as a result of electrolysis of sodium hydroxide solution in 94% ethanol on platinum electrodes. Centrifugation, column chromatography, and dialysis were used to isolate and purify nanoparticles from synthesis by-products. The nanoparticles had a hydrodynamic diameter of about 14 nm, and the surface potential was –20 mV. The particles are soluble in water due to hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface, and also exhibit luminescence in the blue and orange regions of the visible spectrum. The paper discusses the details of the electrochemical synthesis of nanoparticles of this type.
